This is the Mardi Gras of Seattle! So much going on - the Craft Market, the Music Festival, street performers and parades. There is the historic Solstice Parade with Mardi Gras like bands and floats - and the dog parade, on Sunday, with costumes galore - and then there is the freewheeling Solstice Cyclist Parade which starts off the festivities with over 1, naked, but painted, cyclists riding through the streets.
The event was started by streakers who crashed the parade. The first person to do so may have done so on a dare. Participants now emphasize bodypainting and other artistry.
The annual celebration takes place this weekend, Junein Seattle. The solstice falls on Wednesday, June 21, the day of the year with the most hours of sunlight, certainly worth a celebration starting a few days early. The Solstice Parade starts with the Solstice Cyclists Ride, a large contingent of bicyclists mostly clad only in body paint riding the parade route before the official parade begins.
It is a Mardi Gras styled, entirely human powered event that is distinguished from mainstream public parades by its unusual rules. These four rules are "No written words, signage or recognizable logos; no motorized vehicles except wheelchairs ; no live animals except guide animals ; and no functional weapons. The Solstice Parade was founded in by Barbara Luecke and Peter Toms, and quickly grew to thousands of participants and tens of thousands of spectators. The parade kicks off the Fremont Fairwhich for many years was a benefit for Solid Ground originally known as the Fremont Public Association.

If you count the painted cyclists as part of the parade they used to be, anywayit started on time. In fact, it started a bit early. If you got there the traditional 15 to 20 minutes late, you missed most of the painted cyclists. The cyclists did not lead out the floats.
